Size Descrimination — TV or Not TV That is the Question!

August 16, 2009 No Comments

I just read an article over Glen Johnson’s blog Full Figure Fashion titled “Has Fat TV Gone To Far?“.  I think Glen raises a very good question.

“More to Love” “Drop Dead Diva” “Dance your Ass off” “Ruby” “Bulging Brides” “The Biggest Loser” and “Celebrity Fit Club” Are these shows trying to make a difference or just exploiting a section of the populace?”

My little voice inside wants to say that they are not singling out people of size, they pick on most every group this way, but in light of the political undercurrent and the overbearing attitude of some Militant Obesity Activist like Mimi Roth, give me pause for question.

Let’s just say for the sake of argument that the producers and backers of these shows just want to show that fat people are just like everyone else (which they are), Good intention right? My worry is that regardless of “good intentions” some of these shows may do more harm than good.

I think most people who are not fat will look at it like some kind of carnival freak show, “Step right up, Step right up, See the world’s hairest woman”.  But  perhaps what’s worse is it may cause some overweight people who already have low self esteem go even lower.

So regardless of “good intentions” if it produces “Bad results” then they should not do it.  My suggestion is “Vote with your Remote” turn those fat bashing shows OFF!
