Plus Size Fashion and Politics?
December 17, 2009 3 CommentsI would be willing to bet that not many people think that the universe of fashion has anything to do with politics. After all fashion is glamorous and exciting while politics…ugh, is boooring! We just want to go our way and get our fashion on. What if I told you that fashion can’t exist without politics but politics can exist without fashion? I believe that fashion is one of the foremost expressions of our individualism and freedom, the opposite of which is socialism and collectivism. So
while we are getting our fashion on there are people who are battling everyday to make sure we keep the right to…Get our fashion on!
There is a constant battle in the arena of ideas. So the battle over our freedom and individualism is always in the balance and is never settled. We never get to the point that we can just say, okay it’s our right so we can just move on.
Many of my friends have no interest in politics, either because they don’t know anything about it or they prefer to keep their head buried in the sands of carefree living. This reminds me of a joke; A reporter in downtown New York was interviewing passer by’s in the streets and came across a young man and asked him, “Why do you think today’s youth have no interest in politics, is it ignorance or apathy?” And the young man promptly replied; “I don’t know and I don’t care!” This seems to be the sentiment of far too many these days.
When we choose to neglect politics we tend to fall pray to popular sentiment, being blown wherever Hollywood or the media decides to take us. I don’t think there is enough expression in me to tell you how dangerous this is. In the arena of ideas there is a constant battle for the hearts and minds of the populace and crafty politicians know that whoever controls information in Hollywood and the media has a definite leg up in the fight.
I’m always suspect of the motives of politicians but I think there are some who have good, honest intentions even if their results are bad and herein is the nut of this article. Sometimes good intentions have bad results and especially when it results in a loss of freedom. By definition more governance equals less freedom. Now we need to have laws to maintain civility but we should always have a healthy dose of vigilance and not be so hasty to fight for our pet issue at the demise of another swath of our freedom.
There are many pet issues out there right now (as always), like climate change, health care, obesity and the like. Let’s just take obesity (as is the pet issue of some) for an example. There are organizations who are actively seeking legislation to regulate obesity. Now I think most of us don’t want to suffer ill effects from obesity nor do we want to be responsible for the obesity of others either by cause or payment but, the question is do we legislate control over these issues for the good of the collective and what’s the real price. The price is always freedom! You can insert whichever pet issue or belief you have into the equation and the answer is always “less freedom”. So regardless of our good intention if it results in a loss of freedom then are we really acting in the best interest of everyone?
I believe there is alot more freedom in self governance and self regulation than giving over control of every aspect of our daily life to a government. I have never been one to believe in the existence of a benevolent man made government. I think the founding fathers also felt this way and that’s why the very spirit of our constitution was written around the limitation of government.
Now this article is not about anti government it’s about the need for more self governance so we don’t need more government. We simply need to be more self regulating so that there is little need to give more power to government. If we are not careful the pendulum of government balance can and will swing the other way. As I’ve heard it said, “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.
The freedom of self expression has been a battle fought for and won many times. The liberties we have are not assured. A free people must remain vigilant.

I like how you related fashion to politics. I must admit that I have only recently started paying close attention to politics. The recent FTC guidelines that directly impacted blogging for sure made me stand up and notice. Whether your in business or an individual somewhere politics will impact your daily activities. Great post.
Thanks Glen, I think alot of people are beginning to stand up and take notice, a kind of awakening if you will. We have to stand together. Another agency to keep an eye on is Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)’CPSC 2.0′ Launches Product Safety Agency into Social Media. They have been reeking havoc with their over regulation in other areas and I expect the same in social media.
