Full Figured Fashion Week, A Great Move In The Plus Size Revolution
March 30, 2010 No CommentsAccording to American Demographics, there are more than 40 million women over size 14 that spends over $25 billion annually on clothing, or one-fourth of all clothing sales. Despite the escalating visibility of “fatshionistas” and their fashion cravings, there was no Fashion Week event then dedicated to showcasing fashions for the curvy consumers. Not until the launching of Full Figured Fashion Week last June 25-27, 2009. And excitingly, an upcoming one will be held on June 16-20, 2010 both in New York City.
Fashion Weeks have become popularly known as a prestigious event for its record of success in showcasing elegant couture fashion shows in upscale venues. Full Figured Fashion Week took five years to organize. A partnership of independent designers, retailers, event producers, plus models, and plus industry businesses have come together to set up an inaugural showcase of the very best in fashion for plus size consumers. Thus, the birth of Full-Figured Fashion Week last year as mentioned above.
Produced by DeVoe Signature Events, a special event production and management company specializing in events services like fashion events and events for the plus size community for the past 10 years already, the organizers of FFFWeek hope to produce an event that showcases plus size designs, talented designers, retailers, local boutiques and real size models. On the business side, it is also their aim that FFFWeek will also boost the economic development in fashion designing, clothing merchandising and plus modeling.
Behind DeVoe Signature Events is a talented and dynamic lady, Gwendolyn Devoe. She is the owner of DSE, a former model who is now specializing in plus modeling training, development and management. She has been a long time
advocate of increasing the visibility of fuller figures on fashion runways. She opened in 1998 the Plus Academy, one of New York’s first training program dedicated to aspiring plus models. She has also created the Full Figured and Fabulous, the largest plus model runway competition on the East Coast. Her latest project, Dangerous Curves… the Tour! – a traveling runway show and trunk sale for plus size women. They have gone to several major cities, and the Tour is swiftly reaping national attention and is dubbed as an event that is uplifting and empowering for women of all ages and sizes.
