This 21 year-old Hollywood actress and singer comes from Great Neck, New York who became popular in her role as Tracy Turnblad in the 2007’s big screen remake of the popular Broadway musical, ‘Hairspray’ and as Maggie Baker in the 2008 television movie Queen Sized.
She has had many projects and another big break for Nikki Margaret Blonsky comes by playing the amazing character of Willamina (Will) in the biggest one-hour drama series ‘Huge’ on ABC Family that has just premiered recently. This TV series that airs Monday nights is about a group of male and female teens who are struggling to reduce pounds at a weight loss camp for the sake of gaining acceptance. Nikki is perfect for her role because she can relate well to it. Like Will, she is proud of her full-figured shape.
Nikki has been in love with theater all her life. Even as a little girl, she already loved singing and was fascinated by musical movies like Mary Poppins. As a teenager, she was doing stage performances in local productions at Great Neck’s South Senior High School playing various roles that included Madame Thernardier in “Les Misérables”, Mrs. Lovette in “Sweeney Todd”, Lilli Venessi/Katerine in “Kiss Me, Kate”, and Carmen in “Carmen”, ‘Hair’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’.
After watching a Broadway presentation of Hairspray, Nikki dreamed of making it bigger than the high school theater knowing that her kind of figure is what was required for the lead role of Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. She auditioned for the role, but was rejected because she was too young.
When Hairspray was scheduled to go into a big screen, she immediately submitted for a screen test in Hollywood. Aside from her talent and enthusiasm, the film producer found her to be the natural candidate for the Tracy Turnblad role. Her plus size figure made her perfect to play the role of Tracy Turnblad.
Nikki used to be an ordinary, but ambitious talented girl who never cared about her size. Prior to her role in Hairspray, Nikki used to work serving ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery. Today she is building her name, and has worked together with other great names in Hollywood.
Just like Will in ‘Huge’, Nikki is comfortable in her own skin. She embraces and loves her body with full confidence. This is one great thing about Nikki aside from being a good actress and singer. Nikki said on an interview with Us Magazine “I’m just comfortable and confident in my body. I could care less that the world is seeing me in a bathing suit right now.”
Nikki is proud about the ‘Huge’ show. She expressed how she loves the character of Will, an opinionated, overweight girl who rebelled at her rich parents sending her to a weight camp. Will is against the idea of dropping weight, and refuses to believe that she is ugly simply because she is fat. Nikki told On the Red Carpet‘s Chris Balish “This is showing that plus sized people are beautiful as well.” She hopes that she will touch hearts with the show, and kids watching can relate to her character in the story that will serve them as an inspiration.
Not just her character in Huge, but in real life as well, Nikki wants to play a good role model to today’s youth especially the teenage girls.
