Gwendolyn Devoe is a former plus size model who now specializes in plus modeling, training, development and management. She has produced numerous projects dedicated to plus size consumers, models and the plus community in general. She has practically dedicated her life as a plus size advocate, having been in the fashion industry for 15 collective years.
Ms. DeVoe is the Founder and CEO of DeVoe Siganature Events
(DSE), a full service event production and management company specializing in fashion events and other events for the plus size community for over 10 years. She created this company on her own after having been a party promoter under the name of Diva Affairs.
Her career started when after playing basketball, she gained weight, and had to find new places to shop for clothes. Since then, she free lanced as a plus model for several years, and become an event planner and started to produce fashion events
on plus size fashion. From there, she opened in 1998 the Plus Academy, one of New York’s First training programs dedicated to aspiring plus models. Her other creations include Full Figured & Fabulous, a runway model competition for aspiring plus size models on the East Coast; the Dangerous Curves…the Tour, a traveling runway show and sample sale; and Project Curves , a traveling plus model workshop. DSE is New York based, but she travels a lot in the United States with DSE uplifting and empowering plus size women through workshops and fashion shows, and remarkable sample sale experience. She wants women in other cities to have the opportunity to receive the benefits of everything that DSE has to offer them.
She loves to part the gift of empowerment with other plus size women as a most sought after motivational speaker on the topics of body image, plus modeling and fashion consultation for plus size women and teens.
One of her biggest creations is the monumental Full Figured Fashion Week, which was launched in New York City last June 25-27, 2009. For a second time, Full Figured Fashion Week returns to New York City on June 16-19, 2010, which will expectedly create again a huge landmark in the fashion scene.
In an interview by fablove with her in 2009, she said that “I focus on plus size women because I am a plus size woman and I know the challenges I sometimes face when I am looking for events that are specifically targeted to my interests.” Further, she said that “I was inspired to create FFFWeek because plus size fashion designers have traditionally been left out of the traditional Fashion Week events. Also, I believe that plus size consumers need to know that there are other choices available to them besides those that they are accustomed to hearing about.”
With everything that Ms. DeVoe has done for the plus industry, I would say that truly she is one of the great pillars in the Curvy Revolution.
