In our society and culture that associate thinness to beauty and success, the phenomenon of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia has become a major health issue affecting young people especially girls and women who usually are prone to size discrimination. Sadly, there have been reports that tell about the existence of numerous sites and blogs that support and promote the spread of eating disorders incidence.

Spanish political group the Convergence and Union (CIU) has presented a proposal to the Government, urging them to take action against eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia in Spain. Read the entire blog post here: Allwalks.org

NAAFA offers another HAES scholarship in 2011 to encourage further study across a variety of disciplines that incorporates Health At Every Size (HAES) tenets and principles and to support the civil right efforts to end size discrimination and bias.

Foster City, CA – In the hopes of encouraging further study across a variety of disciplines that incorporate Health At Every Size (HAES) tenets and principles and to support the civil right efforts to end size discrimination and bias, NAAFA is once again offering its HAES Scholarship to be awarded at their 2011 Convention being held at the Westin Washington Dulles Airport Hotel August 4-8, 2011.

NAAFA’s first HAES Scholar Jenny Copeland, utilized the scholarship to present her research at the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. ‘This is exactly how we envisioned the purpose of the scholarship; allowing bright minds to further pursue their research and opportunities to highlight their work. We are so proud of our NAAFA’s first HAES Scholar Jenny and NAAFA is committed to offering another scholarship in 2011”, states Lisa Tealer, Board Member and Director of Programs.

Undergraduate and graduate students from accredited academic institutions, which utilize Health at Every Size tenets in their studies and research are eligible to apply for the NAAFA HAES Scholarship. AREA 51 Zero Tolerance

The “Plus Size Advocate” is getting set to launch it’s new segment called “AREA 51 ZERO TOLERANCE“. Area 51 has been on my mind for awhile as way to bring awareness to the abnormal size zero stick figure images of fashion and fame. I’m not interested in criticizing skinny people…hey if God gave you the body you have then Rock it, however if you are trying to meet some unhealthy and mostly unatainable size zero body measurement, then this segment is aimed at you.

I know a little bit about the problem as I have someone, shall we say, close to home who practices benge and purge precisely because of the presure she feels to maintain a certain body measurement. For the sake of privacy I will not tell you who it is, but she is an aspiring model with a known modeling agent. When she confessed to me that she had this problem my heart fell and I didn’t really know how to handle it. I encouraged her to just be herself and if she was plus size then she could get into plus size modeling and she just said “NO WAY”! Enough said…you can see the problem she faces and she’s not alone.

What I hope to acheive with this segment is to compare and contrast by way of dry humor, images and articles to show just how rediculous this whole notion of size zero REALLY IS. Basically illustrating the rediculous by being rediculous.

Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) has just released the agenda and announced the opening of the registration to their 2011 national conference. Agenda is now available for you to read through at their website.

With a conference theme “Coming Into the Light!  Strategies and Hope For Recovery in BED and Associated Conditions”, this must attend event is set on March 31 to April 2, 2011 at Firesky Resort and Spa, Scottsdale, AZ.

To grace the event are experts on binge eating disorder, obesity, food addiction, advocacy, and families, and BEDA ambassador and panel participant, spokesperson, advocate, and model Chenese Lewis.   Keynote speakers are author and self-esteem expert Jess Weiner and B. Timothy Walsh, MD.
