A study published online in the Archives of General Psychiatry showed that eating disorders and sub threshold eating conditions are prevalent in the general adolescent population. In fact, it’s all over the news that “eating disorder hit more than half a million US teens, but few have sought treatment for the problem”.
The effect on them is devastating because as per the findings of the study, teens with anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders are more vulnerable to suffer from other psychiatric disorders, role impairment, and worst suicide. As to what degree they suffer, depends on their type of eating disorder.
The study that examined the prevalence of eating disorders and similar behavior was made through the surveyed 10,123 adolescents ages 13-18. From the teens surveyed, 0.3% suffered from anorexia nervosa, 0.9% from bulimia nervosa, and 1.6% experienced binge eating disorder.
